5 Practical Tips For Safe Drinking

March 8 ,2022

The best way to experience the thrill is either with the adventurous games or simply drinking the booze. But alcohol out of limit can lead to minor or major injuries, accidents, serious embarrassment, and long-term health problems. To be more specific, even drinking small amounts of alcohol increases your cancer risk. But you must avoid drinking if you are underage(legal age to drink), pregnant, planning a pregnancy, breastfeeding, on medicine, or feeling depressed. If you don't have any of these conditions, then you can drink your favorite booze. But it shouldn't be a drinking spree; rather, it must be safe drinking.

To guide you through safe drinking, we have come up with these magic 5 Tips. Let's learn about them.

Keep Track of your limit on alcohol

Scientifically speaking, a standard drink has about 10 grams of ethanol (alcohol), which is the amount your body can process in 1 hour. Depending on your age, weight, gender and how you feel at the time determines how much alcohol you can handle. Thus, you must first understand how much alcohol you are having and how much you should have. However, health experts recommend that healthy adults should drink no more than 10 standard drinks a week and no more than 4 standard drinks on any one day. Crossing this limit can bring lifetime risk along with alcohol-related disease or injury.

To be within the limit, you can have an app to track your alcohol consumption or a friend to help you out.

Eat before and during drinking sessions

An empty stomach is never good to consume alcohol. Thus, you must eat food before or while drinking alcohol. When you drink on an empty stomach, much of the alcohol you drink passes quickly from the stomach and to the small intestine, where most of the alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream. This will have a fast effect on the body. But when alcohol is consumed with food, it prevents alcohol from passing quickly to your small intestine. Food will help alcohol to stay in the stomach, which means slow absorption and the slower effect on the body. Please note you must avoid salty snacks as they can make you thirsty and likely to drink more.

Don't mix alcohol with sugary or energy drinks.

Consuming alcohol with sugary drinks can lead to fatty liver disease or pancreatitis. To add more, the alcohol-caffeine combination leads to elevated blood sugar and blood triglyceride levels, leading to a higher risk of diabetes. Researchers say that drinkers are three times more likely to binge drink the cocktail than those who do not mix alcohol with energy drinks. In fact, consuming energy drinks with alcohol can also harm your heart health. Both alcohol and energy drinks have their distinct effect on blood pressure and, when combined, confuse your internal system.

In fact, your weight loss journey can also get affected if you combine energy drinks and alcohol.

Always try to avoid mixing the two drinks, but if you feel like drinking both, then have them separately with some gaps.

Slow your intake with alcohol-free drinks

Blood alcohol concentration( BAC) is the amount of alcohol in your blood. The higher your BAC, the greater the risk for injury or overdose. Drinking fast can also increase BAC. Thus, binge drinking, i.e., drinking more than 4 drinks in 1 sitting, can increase your BAC. Not only that, but it can also get you in a dangerous situation, embarrassment, or even suffer alcohol poisoning.

To keep safe, you must slow down your drinking to just 1 drink per hour. Always try to say "I am Out" to drinking games before it starts. You can have your thirst quenched with water first and then with alcohol. Instead of gulping alcohol, opt for slow sipping.

Don't drink and drive

Drink and drive is also called driving under the influence (DUI). In Nepal, the Driving Under the Influence (DUI) check is known as MA PA SE (Madak Padartha Sewan) check. For this, a Breathometer is used by traffic police. DUI is not only a legal obligation but also a moral one. Drinking and driving not only increases the chances of you getting hurt or hurting some strange being on the road. It can damage one's life and others associated with that person. Thus, you must avoid drinking and driving in any circumstance. To do so, you can plan out what you will be doing before going out, have a friend to stay sober, or have a taxi driver in booking for going and coming.

So, Should You not Drink at all?

Now, we are not saying you must give up on alcohol, but along with limiting drinking, you must check for the quality of the drink.
